Prior to starting Great Circle Coaching, I spent 20 years as a naval officer, a practicing attorney and an executive with a Fortune 250 company. In 2006, I moved to the UK when my wife was offered a promotion and transfer. It gave me a wonderful opportunity to ask what I truly wanted to do with the next step in my professional life. When I focused on what was important to me and what gave me a “buzz”, the answer appeared - helping people achieve their dreams through coaching. At that moment, I made a conscious choice to pursue a career in something that I really loved doing. There was an entirely new dimension to professional happiness when my work was aligned with what “made me tick.” Although I enjoyed, and was successful in, my previous careers, my life is much richer as a result of choosing to do what I love. I live in Surrey with my wife, Stacey, and my favorite hobby is rambling the countryside with our springer spaniels. I also enjoy traveling, reading, yoga, running, and playing golf. Who We Are About Matt: My name is Matt Horan and I am the owner and Managing Director of Great Circle Coaching. I am based in the UK and coach clients in the US and UK. About Our Name: Having served as a ship’s Navigator, I see navigation as a perfect metaphor for my clients’ growth through personal coaching – locating where you are right now, choosing a destination and charting a course to get there. The name “Great Circle” is a continuation of the navigational metaphor that works so well for the coaching process. It comes from the term used to describe courses over long sea journeys. When traveling a long way around the Earth, the shortest distance is a course that matches the curvature of the Earth (a “great circle course”). In order to travel such a curved course, you have to break it into smaller sections, converting each one to a straight line. That way, you can plot it on a chart and set a course. In coaching, once you set a destination for yourself we can find the shortest way to get there - even if we have to break it down into “bite-size” pieces so we can easily plot your course along the way. The technical stuff: I obtained my Juris Doctor (with honors) from the University of Florida College of Law and my Bachelor of Science in Engineering from The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.
